Who was the customer?
A couple looking to downsize and transform a dated bungalow into a modern, low-maintenance home.
How did they hear about you, and why did they choose you?
The clients were referred to Birch Construction by a family friend for whom we had previously completed an extension. Having also completed another project for a different family member, they felt confident in our expertise and trusted us to deliver their renovation.
What was the brief?
To convert a run-down bungalow into a spacious, modern home with a large extension, improved access, and low-maintenance finishes.
What were the steps taken to achieve the brief?
- Demolition & Extension: Removed the entire rear and one side of the bungalow to create a large extension, significantly increasing the living space.
- New Porch & Access Improvements: Built a new porch and relocated the front door to the centre of the property, enhancing both access and curb appeal.
- Exterior Finishes: Applied EcoScape composite cladding and K-rend to the front and retaining walls, giving the property a sleek, modern look while reducing maintenance.
- Landscaping: Installed a large porcelain patio to the rear garden, creating a durable and stylish outdoor living area.
- Interior Renovation: Completed a full internal renovation with new electrics, plumbing, plastering, and modern finishes throughout.
Were there any challenges along the way?
Yes — the rear garden had no access for plant equipment, meaning over 100 tonnes of soil had to be removed through the bungalow using a series of conveyor belts. In addition, the scale of the extension required careful planning to knock down the rear and side walls while maintaining structural integrity.
Who worked on this project?
Our experienced team of tradespeople, led by Birch Construction’s site manager, managed all aspects of the renovation, including demolition, structural work, extension, cladding, rendering, landscaping, and interior finishes.
