Who was the customer?
Kate Jennison, a homeowner in West Norfolk, approached us to renovate her historic property.
Where was the project located?
The project took place in a rural village in West Norfolk.
How did they hear about you, and why did they choose you?
Kate and her family spoke to several contractors before meeting Jake and the Birch Construction team. From the initial meeting, it was clear that our experience, approachability, and understanding of working with older properties made us the right fit for the job. As Kate said herself, “It was clear to us that Jake was the contractor we should choose.”
What was the brief?
The brief was to sensitively renovate a 19th-century home, creating a warm and modern family space while preserving and enhancing the character of the original structure. The goal was to improve the layout, modernise the infrastructure, and bring the building back to life without losing its charm.
What were the steps taken to achieve the brief / What was the solution?
- Initial consultation to align on vision and priorities.
Structural changes, including removing several walls to improve flow and create an open-plan layout. - Installation of a new kitchen and bathroom.
- Full electrical rewire and updated heating system to modern standards.
- Lime plaster applied in key areas to retain historical integrity.
- Restoration of original features including fireplaces, floorboards, and brickwork.
- Replaced windows, added custom doors and floors, and installed wood-burning stoves.
- Collaboration with structural engineers and specialist trades throughout.
Were there any challenges along the way?
As is often the case with historic properties, unforeseen challenges arose once work began. Structural complications and outdated infrastructure required a flexible and experienced approach. Birch Construction adapted quickly, offering practical solutions while maintaining the original vision.
